What are TENS electrodes?

TENS electrodes are self-adhesive pads that are vital to the function of a TENS machine. The electrodes are the conductor of the electric current that allows the TENS machine to pass the electricity through to the patient. The electrode is connected to the TENS machine using a wire or lead and an adaptor. They attach into the TENS machine and into the electrode. There are different types of electrodes available depending on the TENS machine you are using, but these will be stated in your manufacturers instructions.

How often should I replace my TENS electrodes?

Electrode life spans are different for each person that uses them and can vary substantially. For example, a patient that has a lot of body hair will reduce the function of the self adhesive pad much faster than a patient with no body hair. Naturally the self adhesive pads will wear off over time so it is often good practice to stock a spare set at all times in cases where they become no longer effective and the patient is still in need of treatment. Some electrodes however are designed for one-time use and for many cases it is best practice for hygiene reasons to regularly change your electrodes.
