What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective and cost efficient way of providing pain
relief to various parts of the body.
Initially derived from ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture is now
commonly used in the NHS and private physiotherapy clinics and is seen
as one of the most effective ways for treating common types of pain.
Acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing processes and relieves
pain associated with muscular aches, including those stemming from
strains, sprains and spasms, as well as arthritis.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the body's natural pain relieving
hormones such as endorphins. Courses of acupuncture have been shown to
provide longer term pain relief than single sessions.
In particular research has shown acupuncture to be very effective at
treating chronic head pain and migraines. Use of acupuncture for
headaches and migraines is recommended for consideration by NICE.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture should only be administered by trained professionals.
Acupuncture therapists insert needles into certain parts of the body
called acupuncture points.
These points are areas on the body where acupuncture is deemed by the
therapist to be the most therapeutic and the most effective for treating
the patient's condition.
Up to 12 needles may be inserted into the body during a typical 20-40
Therapists may sometimes stimulate the needles to enhance the
effectiveness of the treatment.
